Juno Reveals a Chaotic Jupiter

The early science results from the Juno spacecraft are beginning to be published, and they are painting a picture of Jupiter that is far more complex and chaotic than anyone previously anticipated.

Rather than the neat, orderly bands of clouds we see at the equator, Juno's polar passes have revealed massive, densely packed cyclones, some the size of Earth, swirling in highly turbulent atmospheric conditions. Furthermore, the planet's magnetic field is stronger and more irregular than expected. It just goes to show that even our most familiar planetary neighbours still hold deep, fundamental mysteries waiting to be unravelled.
