Commercial spaceflight has crossed another massive threshold.

The SpaceX Polaris Dawn mission, carrying a crew of four civilians in a modified Crew Dragon capsule, has successfully completed the first-ever commercial spacewalk.

Not only did they execute the spacewalk, but the mission also reached an altitude of 1,400 kilometres—the highest Earth orbit any humans have flown since the Apollo missions. Because the Dragon capsule doesn't have a traditional airlock, the entire cabin had to be depressurised, exposing all four crew members to the vacuum of space. It was a phenomenal test of their newly designed EVA suits and a stark reminder of how rapidly private aerospace is pushing the boundaries.
