History has been made on the Moon today! The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully softly landed their Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft near the lunar south pole.

This is a monumental achievement, making India only the fourth country to land on the Moon, and the very first to successfully touch down in the rugged, treacherous southern polar region.

Following the heartbreaking loss of Chandrayaan-2 a few years ago, and coming just days after Russia's Luna-25 crashed, the sheer tension leading up to the final telemetry call was palpable.

Exploring this region, which contains permanently shadowed craters filled with water ice, is the crucial next step for human lunar habitation.
