Japan has officially become the fifth nation to soft-land on the Moon!

The SLIM (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) spacecraft touched down near the Shioli crater this month, executing an extraordinarily precise 'pinpoint' landing. The mission earned the nickname "Moon Sniper" because of its primary objective: demonstrating unprecedented, pinpoint landing accuracy on the lunar surface.

While the landing was a massive success in terms of navigational accuracy, it didn't go entirely flawlessly...

One of the main thrusters failed just moments before touchdown, causing the lander to tip forward and end up resting on its nose. Despite the awkward orientation, its solar panels eventually caught the sunlight, and the plucky little craft managed to beam back crucial data and deploy its tiny roving robots.
