This month brought the highly anticipated and spectacular "Supermoon." This particular full moon is the closest the Moon has been to Earth since way back in 1948, making it appear roughly 14% larger and 30% brighter than a standard apogee full moon.

Even just looking up at the sky without any optical aid, the stark, ancient lunar mare and bright rays seemed noticeably more prominent. It has been brilliant seeing the influx of photographs from around the world capturing the event over various landmarks and cityscapes. It will be 2034 before the Moon gets this close to us again, so it was wonderful to see so much widespread public interest in simply looking up at our nearest celestial neighbour.
