Millions of people across parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia were treated to a spectacular annular solar eclipse yesterday, perfectly coinciding with the June solstice.



Because the Moon is currently near apogee (its furthest point from Earth), it wasn't large enough to completely cover the Sun, resulting in the famous 'ring of fire' effect. The photographs captured from places like Tibet and Taiwan have been absolutely staggering. While we only saw a very slight partial eclipse here in the UK, following the global excitement online is always a thrilling experience. The celestial mechanics aligning so perfectly never cease to amaze me.
